Dear Parents, our theme for the next two months is based around the topics of ‘winter’ and ‘Dinosaurs’. The children are very excited about making a winter and dinosaur collage and creating a dinosaur role play area.
During the next two months all children will be involved in lots of different learning experiences and activities- here are just some of them…..
-paint, draw and write creatively using a variety of media
-set up a dinosaur role play area
-create a dinosaur collage
-make dinosaur animals /masks
-Writing words/sentences [linked to topics], focus on sounds of each letter- lots of phonic work, emphasis on blends.
-continued reinforcement of word building using sounds/blends and appropriate formation.
-Reading words from books/word banks etc- emphasis on using sounds/syllables
-To continue spelling scheme, focusing on key words and CVC’s
-To describe story settings and incidents
-To re-enact familiar stories through role play
-To recognise capital letters and full stops and use them during writing activities
-To talk about letters, words and sentences.
Begin to use a range of cues to identify unknown words.
-To help children build up a list of high frequency words when reading and writing.
– To be able to read a familiar text with support.

-Develop an ability to follow print in text and identify key words. Begin to use a range of cues to identify unknown words i.e. sounds, syllables.
-Continue and reinforce P2 spelling scheme-cvc words and key words
-Begin to build up a basic sight vocabulary.
-To start to spell rhyming words using sounds, continue with ‘I can write a word’ from Jolly phonics scheme
– Order numbers up to 20, extend to 30
-Consolidate understanding of number to 10/20
-Count quantities & match to appropriate number
-Count forwards/backwards from different starting points
-Know the number before/after
-Count in 2’s, 10`s and 5`s within 20/100
-Odd and even numbers
-Introduce chld to concept of ‘subtraction’
-Begin to calculate mentally within 5/10/20
-Add two numbers practically within 5/10/20-Become more aware of their world around them-Winter
-Life in dinosaur land-naming animals, plants, and climate-animal habitats, compare cold/warm places
-Electricity and its uses
-Pancake Tuesday, Valentines Day, Feast Days –St Brigid’s, St Patrick, Mother’s day….
Things from home…… I would really appreciate anything related to the dinosaur theme –dinosaur toys/cuddly animals, books, magazines, animal print fabrics/ materials etc- Thank you AM Kealey

-Reading words from books/word banks etc- emphasis on using sounds/syllables
-development of reading skills through shared ,guided and independent reading-giving children lots of opportunities to read a range of fiction, non- fiction, poetry ,nursery rhymes etc.
-Shared and guided writing –writing letters, labels, captions etc
-Numeracy-numbers 1-10, number names, making sets, ordering numbers
-Compare 2 numbers- which is more/less than
-Measures- comparing two objects of differing sizes, width etc Begin to use language longer/shorter, heavier/lighter etc to make direct comparisons of two quantities.
-Money-recognising 1p, 2p and 5p-coin rubbings, sets etc
-Use shapes to make and describe models, pictures and patterns. Naming 2D shapes
-Talk about, recognise and recreate simple patterns.

-Life in dinosaur land-naming dinosaurs, plants, climate-animal habitats
-Electricity and its uses
-Winter- exploring the season- comparisons- cold/warm places
